LIVE: Senate committee holds a hearing on the infant formula shortage  — 5/26/22

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee holds a hearing on “Infant Formula Crisis: Addressing the Shortage and Getting Formula On Shelves.”

The Federal Trade Commission is launching an investigation into whether mergers in the baby formula industry contributed to the current shortage.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf said inspections found “shocking” conditions at Abbott’s infant formula plant in Michigan.

The FDA commissioner also said an investigation couldn’t conclude that the unsanitary conditions led to four infants falling ill, two of whom died, but he called the confluence of events “highly unusual.”
