OF THE BLUE OAK BOULEVARD. MIKE: UNIVERSITY TUITION IS NOT CHEAP, NEWSFLASH. FOR THOSE WHO NEED HELP FINDING THEIR EDUCATION, NAVIGATING THE FINANCIAL AID PROCESS CAN BE DIFFICULT. BRANDI: TO GIVE YOU AN ORIENTATION, WE HAVE A COMMISSION ON MICHAEL MLEMUS WITH THE CALIFORNIA STUDENT. >> THANKS FOR HAVING ME. BRANDI: WHAT DO YOU TELL PARENTS AND STUDENTS ABOUT APPLYING FOR STUDENT AID? >> THE CENTRAL MESSAGE IS THAT FINANCIAL HELP IS AVAILABLE. THERE IS A MISCONCEPTION THAT THERE IS NO HELP OR YOU COULD NOT QUALIFY. WHAT WE WANT THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF FINANCIAL AID IN THE FORM OF FREE SCHOLARSHIPS TO UNDERTAKE THEIR EDUCATION BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL, WHETHER IT IS A UNIVERSITY OR PROFESSIONAL TRAINING. THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES. MIKE: AND THE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN APPLICATION, WHAT SHOULD THEY BRING TO THE TABLE? >> A LARGE PART WILL BE THE TAX INFORMATION FROM THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS. IF THEY HAVE A LIST OF SCHOOLS THEY ARE INTERESTED IN WANT TO ATTEND. WE MAKE IT EASY. WE HAVE THIS CASH FOR COLLEGE WEBINARS AND WORKSHOPS THAT WE HOST ONLINE AND IN PERSON IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. WE LITERALLY HAVE A LIST THAT SHOWS EVERYTHING WE NEED. IT’S A CHECKLIST. THIS MAKES THEM EASY TO PREPARE. THEY CAN ACCESS ONLINE OR IN PERSON AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. BRANDI: YOU TALKED ABOUT THE BARRIERS YOU OFTEN THINK THEY HAVE IN GETTING HELP. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WANT PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO SEEK THIS INFORMATION. >> ESPECIALLY LIVING THE PANDEMIC, PEOPLE WONDER WHY. WHY DO THEY HAVE TO ATTEND SCHOOL TO BEGIN? IT OPENS MANY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, CONNECTIONS, NETWORKS. LEAVE MESSAGES TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU CAN NOT TRAIN THE PROCESS. ASSISTANCE AND FINANCIAL AID ARE AVAILABLE. THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE US ON THE STUDENT COMMITTEE WHOSE JOBS ARE FORWARD AND TO TALK ABOUT THIS INFORMATION AND HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS. FINANCIAL IS A COMPLEX SITUATION. THE APPLICATIONS ARE NOT THE EASIEST BUT THAT’S WHY WE HAVE THESE RESOURCES WHERE WE EXPOSE EVERYTHING AND HELP THEM COMPLETE THE APPLICATIONS. MIKE: YOU WILL HAVE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THESE WORKSHOPS. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO ATTEND AND WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION ABOUT REGISTRATION? >> THIS PART IS MY FAVORITE PART. IT’S FREE. ACCESS TO OUR RESOURCES COSTS NOTHING. AS FOR THE WORKSHOPS, YOU CAN GO TO OURS. IF THEY LOOK FOR IT, IT WILL BE OPENED. TONIGHT WE HAVE ONE THAT IS PASSING AND WE HAVE THE NEW CYCLE OF FINANCIAL ADJUSTMENTS OPENING ON OCTOBER 1 AND WHICH WILL BE FOR THE 2023-2024 CYCLE. NOW WE CLOSE A CYCLE. FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO ATTEND THE COMMUNITY, SEPTEMBER 2 IS THE DEADLINE. TODAY YOU CAN ACCESS THAT WORKSHOP. THE LAST ONE I WILL SHARE IS DUE TO LEGISLATION, SCHOOLS, SCHOOLS, AND SCHOOLS WILL BE REQUIRED THIS YEAR TO VERIFY THAT ALL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS COMPLETE A FAFSA OR CALIFORNIA APPLICATION. WE ARE ONE OF THE FEW STATES THAT HAS THIS TYPE OF LEGISLATION. WE ARE BECAUSE WE HOPE ME WILL EXTEND ACCESS TO THOUSANDS MORE STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF THIS INFORMATION. BRANDI: IT HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN MANDATORY, IT HAS BEEN OPTIONAL FOR FAMILIES. COMPLETING THIS HELPS YOU ON THE WAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WITH US. LOTS OF GREAT INFORMATION.

College tuition isn’t cheap, and for those who need help financing their education, navigating the financial aid process can be complicated. Michael Lemus with the California Student Aid Commission joined KCRA 3’s morning show to discuss what options students or parents may have. Lemus said College-going students and parents often wonder what kind of financial aid they qualify for. “There’s actually a lot of financial help in terms of free grants available,” Lemus said. “The good news is we make it easy. We have these webinars and workshops available online.” To learn more about these free webinars or to register, visit here.
