DepEd aims for additional non-financial benefits for teachers │ GMA News Online

The Department of Education will focus on studying possible more non-financial benefits for teachers, its spokesman Michael Poa said on Wednesday.

In an interview with ANC, Poa made a correction to his earlier statement that the DepEd will look into non-basic salary benefit allowances they can give to teachers amid calls for a salary hike.

“I have to apologize and stand by that. Subsidies are always a possibility in non-salary benefits,” he said.

“But in terms of the budget, I mean, this is an ongoing study, so I don’t want to get ahead of the results, but I also think we’re focusing on the non-financial benefits right now,” he added. .

One of the benefits most requested by teachers in the field is health insurance, according to Poa.

He added that the DepEd is also looking into promotion training as one of the possible non-financial benefits for teachers. According to him, teachers spend a lot of money on these trainings.

Poa said there is a misconception that teachers are paid low salaries. He said that since 2019, the salary of teachers has already increased. The entry salary is currently 23,000 pesetas and is expected to increase to 27,000 by 2023, he added. —LBG, GMA News
