Bay Area student gets a head start on financial literacy

It may sound like just a kid’s game, but Saa’Nai Bryant says the financial simulation she was participating in was teaching her one of the most important lessons she’ll ever learn.

Florida high schools to offer financial literacy courses in 2023-24 school year

For 15-year-old Saa’Nai Bryant, this kind of learning is nothing new

He said his father was talking about finances and common sense long before the state made it a requirement

“Working with this game is like Life and Monopoly together,” he said. “How to save, how to save and then budget.”

Most 15-year-olds talk about spending money, buying things and living in the now, but Bryant and his friends say they’re starting to learn and understand the importance of saving and investing, not just for the future, but back in the day- life today in these moments.

Instructor Lars Doebler said learning these lessons is more important than ever.

“Plan with your income and your outgoings,” he said. “Why this is more important today is because inflation and everything has been more expensive that you have to plan even more for these kinds of expenses.”

That’s why Doebler has moved from financial consulting to education, and it seems to be paying off.

“You can lean on people, but not too much,” Bryant said. “Once you lean on too many people, they lean on you, so you have to lean on yourself a little and lean on people a little.”

One person he leans on for advice is his father, Harold Bryant, Jr., who he says is no stranger to finance.

He was talking dollars and common sense to all his kids long before the state made it a high school requirement. And he said he thinks it should start even sooner.

“I think financial literacy needs to be a core course,” he said. “Because, let’s say a kid learns that in elementary school, by the time he gets to high school he probably already knows what career he wants to pursue and then he won’t waste much time.”

Her daughter said she’s certainly not wasting time getting her finances in order to weather any financial storms that may come.

“Him playing a role, teaching me about stocks, crypto and putting more of my money towards not what I want, but what I need,” he said.
