JUBA, Aug 4 (Reuters) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the finance minister and central bank governor from their posts, according to a decree read on state television.

The decree said Kiir had appointed Dier Tong Ngor as finance minister to replace Agak Acuil Lual, while first deputy central bank governor Johnny Ohisa Damian will replace Moses Makur Deng as acting governor.

No reason was given for their replacements.

Ngor had been appointed governor in 2020, and at the time it was the second time the head of the bank had been replaced.

Lual had been appointed finance minister in 2021 and had presented the 2022/23 budget to parliament on Wednesday.

South Sudan’s economy has stalled since a civil war erupted in 2013 that forced a quarter of its population to flee to neighboring countries.

The war has also choked oil production, the economy’s main activity, while output in other sectors such as agriculture has also plummeted.
